Miss Martha is a breast cancer survivor. Before Martha developed breast cancer she was a show dog and a bit of a princess. Because Martha came from a long line of very healthy, well bred dachshunds, her owner felt that it was that fine not to spay her until she was 4 or 5 years old in case her breeder wanted to use her in his breeding program.
When she was 4 years old a lump was found in her mammary chain. Martha had the tumor removed and was spayed. She recovered well and did not need any extensive cancer treatment. Martha is an illustration of why it is important to have dogs spayed before their first heat cycle. Even dogs from the healthiest lineage can have health problems! However, this is not the end of Martha’s story. Could there have been another plan for her? Maybe. Martha’s owner decided to see if she could follow in her Uncle Malcolm’s foot steps and become a therapy dog. Well, Martha proved that even a princess can become a wonderful therapy dog! Martha gives her love to patients, family members and staff on the oncology unit at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Her owner reports that Martha is happiest when she is visiting “her” friends at the hospital!
