My mom recently passed away and she left a red short haired dachshund behind. I am her daughter and I'm currently taking care of Doxie. Unfortunately Doxie is used to having her own person, no other animals, and a fenced yard. We live in Colorado Springs outside the city limits. We don't have a fenced yard and we have frequent visits from coyotes, bears, and bobcats. We have a blue heeler/border collie who is not happy to share her home. Doxie can continue to live with us but ultimately we need to find her a good home. Is this something you can help with? I would be happy to pay part of her adoption fee, and drive to Ft. Collins if you have meetings with prospective adoptive families. She was rescued from the Humane Society and lived with my mom for 5 years. We aren't sure of her age - the Human Society estimated it at 5 years when she was adopted but my mom's vet thought she was younger - maybe two. The records at her current vet list her as 10 (using the Humane Society age of 5). She is current on her shots (K9 Rabies, DA2PCPV, and Leptospirosis. Her teeth were good at her last visit in October 2009. She has had dental work in the past - cleaning and some teeth have been extracted. She currently weighs 17 lbs which the vet things is a good weight for her. She has heartworm pills that she will start taking them in May. Doxie is a sweet dog, loves to burrow under quilts (my mom was a quilter), cuddle and loves to go on walks. She likes to spend time outdoors in my mom's fenced yard and sits in the sun. She is not good with most other dogs. She does get along with my Blue Heeler/Border Collie. I think it is because she met Denali when my mom first adopted her and saw her every week when I had lunch with mom. Doxie is smart but stubborn - I guess that is common with dachshunds. She is house trained and can ride in the car without being crated. She has been around my sister's children (ages 7 and 14) and gets along fine with them. My mom also had women come in to sew once a week up until a year ago and Doxie did fine with them as well. My mom was not in good health the past couple of years so Doxie didn't get much exercise or play time. She loves her toys and will throw them around herself. I took her for walks which she loves and now she is walking with me every day.

This Colorado Sweetheart is a Colorado Dachshund Rescue friend. All of our dogs, are spay and neutered, up to date on vaccines and are heartworm negative and on preventative. Most also have a dental done. We rehome close to 100 Dachshunds each year, and save many of them from certain death at local shelters. By working with local shelters, we are able to give them a second chance to find their new forever homes.
